How to attract and retain the right people

If you're one of the many executives struggling with finding and keeping the right people and propel your busienss forward, you'll find these insights helpful.

If you're frustrated by trying to motivate people, work instead to develop a company where people are self-motivated - where they do things because they want to. When we're inspired, we enjoy our work, we're productive, and we're proud of our efforts. We remian focused and committed to the task at hand. In short, we put forth our best effort.

An organization will attract and retain a team of people dedicated to the success of the organization and its goals when it has a Purpose, a Mission, and a set of Values that is lives by, effectively communicates them throughout the organization, and measures its actions and decisions against them. Let's define what Purpose, Mission and Values are and talk about the implications of having them clearly defined and emboided in the organization.

Purpose:

Purpose is the "WHY" of the equation. Purpose defines why we do what we do. It defines why we go to work each day. Without purpose, people just go through the motions and as most of us know, there's a great difference between activity and achievement. Having a purpose creats a yardstick to speak, to measure our decisions against. It helps us become passionate, helps us to select among the many options presented to us, helps us make better hiring decisions, and keeps us on track. It's possible to succeed without a clear purpose, but having one speeds and magnifies the results.

When a company has a clearly defind purpose it beings to act as a magnet, attracting the kind of people who will further the purpose: people who are like-minded. Not only will having a purpose retain the right people, but it will also act to attract them. This is the power behind the success of many not-for-profit organizaions. Although they often are unable to pay their staff great sums of money, they continue to attract and retain people who are dedicated an who work hard to achieve the purpose of the organizaion, While your organizaion's purpose may not be as altruistic as not for profit's purpose, it definitely plays an important, almost critical role.

How you develop a meaningful purpose? Involve people throughout the organizaion in order to develop and distill the essence of why your organization exist. Don't simply rely on the executive team to develop and then dictate the purpose to the group. And certainly don't rely on an outside company to create your purpose for you! It has been my experience that a well-defined statement of purpose is singe sentence, crafted to capture the essence of "why" the organizaion exists using a few words as possible and resonating when read or spoken. This brings clarity and energy to it, and makes it much easier to keep in mind when making decision and policies.

Mission:

Mission is the "WHAT" of the equation. Mission defines what the company does to achieve its Purpose. The better defined a company's mission is, the easier it is to choose among many opportunites that will present themselves. A mission - the means to achieve the Purpose, can be fairly narrow or be somewhat broad. However, one that is too narrow can unduly restrict an organization from considering opportunites that would otherwise be an excellent fit, and one that is too broad offers no guidance at all and may cause an organizaion to spread itself too thin, do a poor job at everything, and essentially dilute its effectiveness.

How do you determine an appropriate mission? Again remember to involve people throughout the orgainzaion to develop and distill the essence of what your organizaion is about. Don't simply rely on the executive level to develop and then dictate the mission to the group. Work to strike that balance between clarity and confinement - not too broad, yet not overly restrictive.

Values:

Values are the "HOW" of the equation. Values defines how the Mission wil lbe carried out in an effort to achieve the Purpose. They define the "rules of the game". Some of these calues will come to mind quite easily, things like honest, courtesy, kindess, and ethics. But some other important values will only surface when brainstorming takes place - when different perspectives and voices are heard. Values like authenticity and vulnerability may be placed on the table for consideration. (Which, by the way, are two essential qualities of an exception lead.) It doesn't matter which values are decided upon as being important to the company. What is important however, is that whatever they are, everyone in the compay lives by and supports them. It's important that the policies and decisions of the companys are in alignment with them. If the company has an acknowledged list of values it purports to live by and then chooses to ignore them, the list becomes a sore point and acts as a negative reflection of what kind of organizaion you really lead.

When a company has clearly defined its Purpose, Mission and Values, then all decisions, policies and actions will have a measuring stick to keep them on course and you will have an organization which attracts and keeps the best! You'll create an organizational culture which naturally acts as a manget to attract and retain like-minded people. And you'll also have the framework to interview about the things that matter most to you and your organization. No longer will people be hired based solely on technical abilities or simply to fill seats.

Exceptional leadership inspires the best effort in others!

Article that I came across

Here is a interesting article that I came across. It is with regards to the following statement:

" Our people are our most important asset, the human capital. What can Singapore Customs do to develop our people to excel and realize their maximum potential."

People, humans, are indeed important asset. It is the most abundant "natural" resource that we have in Singapore. Thus developing our people to excel and ralize their maximum potential is the up-most importance to any successful organization.

From my personal opinions, there are two essential steps in general to develop people. The scale will be corporately and individually. Corporately, my understanding, limited to the the experience I have, will be mission and vision: How each individual of the corporate will agree and live on the mission vision. This will give a general direction for everyone, knowing what the whole corporate heading is towards. This in turns, give direction to the people so that they will be too lost. Direction is like the flag or the colour of an army. It let the people keep in focus.

Following that flag is not sufficient for people to excel and ralize their maximum potential. In order for that to come to truth, we need to recognise that opportunites are needed for people to excel, to shine their light. This can be done, in a safer environment when they do at small project teams. How to have big victories or do big things? All these start will small victories and doing the small things in life. Just like building up, it starts with some form of foundation and things are built on what is already laid beforehand. Our forsight is the ability to see what ca be done with the present doings. We are where we are, is ther result of what we have done in the past. Thus for people to excel, there are a few things to take note: Who we are? Where we are? What we are?

Who we are? Identity in the corporate is important. Identity as individuals is equally important too. Coroporate is made up of individuals, so thus the identity of the corporate linked to the identities of the individuals of the corporate. Knowing how one's identity brings a sense of belonging. When one is not clear of one's identity, what is commonly know as identity crisis, how can the person be able to even start doing things; Less than saying excelling or recognising own potentials. Thus is put importance in knowing who ourselves, then we can evaluate where we are.

The place of influence, the place of impact and the place of all aspect of life; the time of life we are in are situation that will have a part to play on how well we can excel and the east of realising our maximum potential. This recognition is a little challenging, especially during transition period, for some groups of peopl.e Knowing where we are now, and how did we come to where are are will help us to identify what we need to do and where should we go next. In ways, when one knows the environment, there are two ways to approach, either change the enivornment or change oneself approach to the environment. This means flexibility nad also recognises how one react to the different kind of situation that arise. This is life milestones and life-road mpas recoreds and set periods of time of defining moments of the individual. Who and where, defining the identity and the journey, Now is what we are?

Human captial: assets to the company and national; also a member of our own communites. What we really are? It may make us feels like things, however it is really seeing what the purpose of us is. We are not how other people view us: we are determined by the character within that defines us. Knowing what we are is just recognising the true purpose of our being. This will just reveal all the hidden potential that is within each of us. It is like finding a treasure chest. If we do now know that it is a treasure chest, we will not put much consideration about it. Same thing for ourselves, if we see that we are gems that can' be polished, we will remain as it is. However if we ourselves as gems that ce be polished through time and effort, we see all things from a new perspective.

Thus here are also three attitudes that are essential for one to excel and recognise one's potential. Being open-minded to ne ideas and new views as our eyesight is limited to certain ange of view in front of us. We are nog like the flies which has wide-all round view of things. We have our blind spot and that means others are there who can see things that we can't see. This means we also need to be teachable. Life soft clay, it is mouldable to whatever shape it fits. However when it is dried up, it is so much harder to mould it. We are the moulded to be the people of the moment ane one last important thing is, we must have faith and believe in ourselves. The magic is in us! We can only be the best of us. Excellence is not about being the best but doing our best.

Principles without actions? Here are some general actions: Go deep in knowing one's self; looking far to what is installed: asking a big dream to live in. We are living now in the dreams of people who had dreamt of these days in the past.
DREAM ON!
