As people, we are often distracted by what is not important. We can become consumed by the nature of our circumstances, and forget to address the heart of the issue at hand. You may have heard many arguments and reason for why people reject God. One popular criticism comes against the very nature of who Christ is: that God is good. If God is good, how can He send people, whom He claims He loves, to eternal torture and damnation? Paul Martin describes it this way: "God's love is never in conflict with the fact that He is just, righteous, holy, sovereign, etc. For example, He cannot suspend holiness in order to show love."
Because we have sinned, there is a price everyone must pay. We must die. There is no way around that. Still, God gives us a choice. We may either die to ourselves and find life in Christ, or we can face an even worse death. Romans 6:23 tells us that the wages of sin is death. God is just, so He must carry out His sentence because it is His law.
Ultimately, God gives us exactly what we ask for. For those that truly desire to be with Him, He gives us the right to be called His sons, and He allows us into His Kingdom. For those that reject Christ - that is , they have no desire to be with someone they do not understand - God grants that desire as well. So those who wants to be with God are with Him, and those who wish to be separate from Him are as well. It just so happens that being away from God is extremely unpleasant.
So why subject people to eternal damnation? Those who reject Christ were given every reason to repent in this life. They didn't. If there was no repentance in this life, why would anyone find reward in the next?
