In his book, "A Resilient Life", Gordon MacDonald talks about his weeklong experience with former President of the United States, Jimmy Carter, at Habitat for Humanity in Hungary. MacDonald was assigned to the construction of the house next to the home President Carter was working on, so he was able to observe him closely. According to MacDonald, Carter continued to work without taking much rest. He was always earliest to arrive and take a look around the site. If someone asked to take a picture, he would tell them to wait until the end of the day's work. During meal times, he was always at the very end of the line. He refused all the special treatment he could have enjoyed as the former president and served others instead. This humility earned him greater respect in the eyes of all who knew him, far more than his accomplishment of being President.
Jesus also went from the highest place to the lowest. He 'descended to greatness'. Jesus chose to save lowly people such as us by becoming lowly Himself. He demonstrated a life of humble servanthood by not simply talking about it, but by fully showing us what that looked like. He showed us that the path to greatness is not up, but down.
