Life has its ups and downs. Sometimes we do really well in all the various spheres of our lives. We experience amazing fellowship with God, and things at home and work go precisely according to plan. Then , there are other moments in our lives when we back-slide into sin, such as fighting with family, and struggling at work.
Both of these instances can bring us into the presence of God. The first will bring us into His throne room filled with praise, while the latter will bring us to our knees in humble surrender. But how do we approach God in the doldrums of life? What do we feel like our life is in a rut? Arthur Pink writes, "Go forward!... We need to clearly realize there is no such thing as remaining stationary in the spiritual life: if we do not progress-we inevitably retrograde.... Your history this year will either be one of going forward - or backsliding."
We are in a race. Anyone who has been in a race knows that the race needs to be finished. It does not matter, necessarily, how strongly we start the race. If we give up running after God in the middle of our lives, our whole race will be in vain.
However we are doing spiritually, God encourages us to move forward with Him in His eternal presence. We are stubborn; we are rebellious. Yet God says of His people in Hosea 2:14, "Therefore I am now going to allure her; I will lead her into the wilderness and speak tenderly to her."
