What sustains you? The obvious answer should be Christ, but realistically, is it? So often we turn to other sources for entertainment, comfort, for rest, and for relaxation. But rest assured, there is no greater source we could turn to. Ultimately, TV, movies, music, and even friends and family can not satisfy us the way Christ can.
Part of our detachment from this reality, is from the belief that we have to "give up" what we once had. We are giving up our old lives for Christ, and trying to move on from there. So, when times get difficult, or when we simply need a break, we are more likely to run back to what we once felt comfortable with. Like so much of the material things of this world, these comfort items are not evil in and of themselves. However, as John Piper writes: "The Bible defines everything in relation to God. Everything has is true significance in relation to God."
For better or worse, Christ will always be there for us. An encouraging verse to consider is Romans 8:38-39: "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angles, nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
When life is good, Christ is there, and when life is bad, Christ is there. And the best news about this, is that nothing, not even ourselves, could prevent Christ from loving us. When we are faithless, He is faithful. When we run away, God runs with us. That is why we have hope in Him. That is why we can trust Him. And that is why we find the source of our strength in Him.
